REVIEW: Lana Del Rey, Born To Die ***

There has been a lot of recent hype in the media about Lana Del Rey. (Or Lizzie Grant as she used to be known.) The plump lipped beauty from New York has had a lot of press, and not all of it good.

Rolling Stones magazine described her debut album as ‘dull, dreary and pop-starved’ and Ms. Del Rey as ‘another aspiring singer who wasn’t ready to make an album yet.’ Tough criticism. I was one of those who pre-ordered her album following hearing her sing Kinda Outta Luck on the Gossip Girl, season 5 promotion videos. Sadly, and annoyingly, this was the one song that didn’t appear on the album.

But I am still glad that I bought it, her lyrics (whilst dealing with some pretty repetitive themes regarding the fallen woman), are catchy and cleverly written. I particularly love Off to the Races and Radio.

Stand out tracks – These are most definitely Blue Jeans and Video Games. perfectly chilled tracks with some dark references.

Overall verdict-Contary to RS, I loved the album. Her voice is eerily haunting to listen to. I like that the tracks have some grit to them and that she doesn’t try to be a pop star more the ‘self-styled gangster Nancy Sinatra,’ as other fans have titled her. Add her retro-tough girl style to the mix and I think I have a slight girl crush.

Have you listened to the album, what did you think? x
